Taika Waititi Says His STAR WARS Movie Will "Piss People Off," Which Is Exactly What Fans Want to Hear
Taika Waititi sure seems to know how to properly market his Star Wars film project and get fans excited about what he’s doing! The writer and director previously confirmed that he is still developing his Star Wars movie with Lucasfilm and that he was taking his time to make sure to get it right.
He has now followed that up with the thing you don’t want to say to Star Wars fans! During a recent interview with Variety, he said that his movie is going to “piss people off.”
During the premiere of his upcoming movie Next Goal Win, Waititi was asked about his Star Wars movie and he responded, saying: "It will be...dramatic pause...a Taika Waititi film. It’s gonna piss people off."
Yeah, that’s the kind of comment that will get fans pumped up for a Star Wars movie! Hey! go see my movie because it’s going to piss you off! The thing is, let’s be honest, the movie will most likely piss some fans off. The filmmaker is no stranger to drawing the hate out of fanboys,
Waititi has explained that he’s looking to create something new with the franchise and expand the universe beyond all of the characters and locations that we’re familiar with. He has said that he’s still trying to figure out an idea for the movie and that he’s “still throwing everything at the wall.” He later explained that he still hasn’t quite figured out his idea and he’s not even 100% confident that his movie is going to happen.
Waititi later explained that he was stuck on the “middle part” and added: “I’ve got a really good idea for it. It’s just as with all films, it’s this middle part. You’re like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ And then you look at all of those films that are so great, you’re like, ‘Well, I guess they can’t meet some smuggler with an alien sidekick.’“
He talked about what he can bring to the franchise saying: "Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand. I don't think that I'm any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone's like, 'Oh great, well that's the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that's Chewbacca's grandmother.' That all stands alone, that's great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it's a very small story."
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy talked about the project earlier this year saying the project will get made “one day.”
What are your thoughts on Waititi’s recent comments on his Star Wars movie pissing people off?
