Taika Waititi Talks About Juggling Drama and Comedy in THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER and Addresses Criticisms
There was a lot of hype and excitement surrounding Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder before it was released because Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok was so damn good! But, the movie wasn’t really received well by fans as it ended up being way too silly and absurdly over-the-top. This is something that franchise star Chris Hemsworth even admitted to.
During an interview for a newly released Movie Special Book, Waititi acknowledges that it was "very difficult" to find the right tone for the film juggling the drama and comedy. He explained:
"It's an ongoing battle because I want my films to be entertaining, and I want a lot of humor in them - to poke fun not only at the idea of the Space Viking, but also to poke fun at humans. How we bumble our way through life on this planet.
"The comic run is very serious, and Jane's story is especially tense. And so to try to find humor around that stuff, as well as making it an emotional story, was always going to be difficult. And we struggled with that. We wrestled with it throughout the edit, right up until we finished the film.
"We did funny scenes about cancer, we did way more tragic scenes about having cancer. Some audiences really loved the humor part of it.”
He then addressed the fans who criticized the movie:
“Some audiences really wanted it to be just like the comics. But, you know, I always say, if you want it to be exactly like the comics read the comic. You've got to change things here and there to make it a film."
I’m fine with them changing things up for the movies. None of the Marvel projects really follow the comic book stories to a T, Thor: Love and Thunder just took the whole thing to ridiculousness and the story suffered because things just got too silly and distracting. Gorr the God Butcher was such a huge missed opportunity, and Jane Foster's story was heavily watered down and rushed.
