Taika Waititi's STAR WARS Movie Reportedly "Dead"
According to a recent report from Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman, Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film project is "dead.” This is just a rumor, and Lucasfilm has not confirmed this, but with Lucasfilm’s track record of not being able to get a Star Wars movie off the ground, I wouldn’t really be surprised if the news is true.
Honestly, I’d be fine if Waititi didn’t make a Star Wars movie. I’d much rather see him continue to develop original film projects.
Waititi previously explained that he is looking to create something new with the franchise and expand the universe beyond all of the characters and locations that we’re familiar with. The filmmaker has offered updates on the project over the past couple of years.
The filmmaker previously said that he’s still trying to figure out an idea for the movie and that he’s “still throwing everything at the wall.” He later explained that he still hasn’t quite figured out his idea and he’s not even 100% confident that his movie is going to happen. Now it seems like he still has finished his script.
Waititi later stated in an interview with THR that he was stuck on the “middle part” and added: “I’ve got a really good idea for it. It’s just as with all films, it’s this middle part. You’re like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ And then you look at all of those films that are so great, you’re like, ‘Well, I guess they can’t meet some smuggler with an alien sidekick.’“
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy talked about the project earlier this year saying the project will get made “one day.” But, if this recent report is true… maybe not.
