Teaser Trailer For MADDEN with Nicolas Cage as Football Icon John Madden

Amazon MGM Studios has officially unveiled the first teaser trailer for Madden, a biopic that puts the spotlight on one of the most influential figures in football history.

The teaser debuted during the NFL games on Christmas Day and gives us our first look at Nicolas Cage stepping into the oversized shoes of John Madden.

Directed by David O. Russell, the movie tracks Madden’s journey from Super Bowl winning head coach of the Oakland Raiders to becoming a household name thanks to the Madden NFL video game franchise. After health issues forced him out of coaching, Madden’s career took an unexpected turn that ended up changing sports entertainment forever.

The synopsis reads: “‘There is only one John Madden.’ Inspired by a true story. After being forced into retirement by the NFL's Oakland Raiders, fiery former NFL head coach John Madden (Cage) then teams up with a mild-mannered Harvard programmer to rewrite his fading legacy by building the world's first football video game.”

The film dives into the early days of the iconic franchise, which first launched in 1988 under the title John Madden Football for MS-DOS and Apple II. What started as a niche sports project eventually became a cultural juggernaut that reshaped how fans interact with football.

Christian Bale plays Raiders owner Al Davis, while Kathryn Hahn takes on the role of Virginia Madden. John Mulaney appears as Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins, with Sienna Miller, Shane Gillis, and Joel Murray rounding out the supporting cast as legendary broadcaster Pat Summerall.

The movie looks like it has a playful, offbeat energy. It has a slightly unhinged tone that recalls the surprise charm of Apple TV’s Tetris movie, leaning into personality and nostalgia rather than a straight-laced sports drama.

Amazon MGM plans to release Madden exclusively on Prime Video starting Thanksgiving 2026.
