That TRON: ARES Photo Teases a Possible Interesting Direction for the Story

Disney recently released the first photo from director Joachim Rønning’sTron: Ares and a cool detail on the suit was pointed out by Gizmodo and hints the story is going in an interesting direction.

One of the things that most fans obviously noticed is the color red, which is always the color of the villain. The villain from the original film, Sark, sported the color red. Then there’s the data disc, the one that Ares has in the image is not a disc shape.

The one thing I didn’t initially notice was what is on Ares’ data disc. When zoomed in, you can see “Dillinger Systems” stamped into it.

Edward Dillinger was introduced in the first Tron movie and he is the head of ENCOM, a powerful and influential software corporation. As a key antagonist, he is ambitious and unscrupulous, having stolen software created by Kevin Flynn, to advance his own position within the company.

Dillinger uses the Master Control Program (MCP), an advanced and autonomous artificial intelligence, to enforce his control over the company's network and to eliminate any threats to his power. His actions set the stage for the film's conflict, as Flynn seeks to prove Dillinger's theft and restore his own reputation, which he does.

In Tron: Legacy, Cillian Murphy played Edward Dillinger Jr., the son of the original character; he is a software engineer at ENCOM, and he’s on the board. He was being set up as a potential villain, but as far as I know, he’s not a part of the movie. But a Dillinger character must be involved in some way.

So, what makes all of this so interesting, is that if Ares is part of Dillinger Systems in the movie, and Ares is the main character, we are going to get a story from the point of view of a villainous character in this world. The movie will be focused on the villain, not the hero, and that is a very cool and intriguing direction to take things.

The film follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, “who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.”

So, humankind’s first encounter with an A.I. being is going to be an evil one. What do you think?
