The 1985 Sci-Fi Film ENEMY MINE Getting Remade by STAR TREK: PICARD Showrunner Terry Matalas
Terry Matalas, the showrunner behind the final season of Star Trek: Picard, is set to write the script for a remake of the 1985 cult sci-fi movie Enemy Mine for 20th Century Studios.
Enemy Mine is an awesome movie, and it was directed by Wolfgang Petersen and starred Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr.. Set in the late 21st century, the story follows two soldiers from warring species: Willis Davidge, a human, and Jeriba "Jerry" Shigan, a Drac.
After crash-landing on a desolate alien planet, the two must overcome their mutual distrust and learn to cooperate for survival. As they struggle against the planet's harsh environment and hostile creatures, Davidge and Jerry develop an unexpected friendship.
Their bond is further strengthened when Davidge helps Jerry through the birth of his child, a process that ultimately leads to Jerry's death. Davidge pledges to raise the child, bridging the gap between their species and exemplifying the themes of unity and understanding amidst conflict.
If you’ve never seen the original movie, you should check it out! It was based on a novella by Barry B. Longyear, and it was originally published in Isaac Asimov’s Science Fiction magazine in 1979.
It also won the Nebula Award that year for best novella. It was followed by two sequels and eventually published as a trilogy titled The Enemy Papers.
The remake doesn’t have a producer or director yet, but if 20th Century Studios is moving forward with this remake, Matalas is a good start to get the ball rolling on the project.
Matalas was also recently snatched up by Marvel Studios to develop the Vision series.
