The American Bar Association States That CALL OF CTHULHU is Its TTRPG of Choice
The tabletop RPG (TTRPG) world has been taken over with discussions, disappointment, yelling at Wizards of the Coast (WotC), and more regarding the leaked changes to the Open Gaming License (OGL). We’ve covered the topic in a few different ways including my paragraph-by-paragraph breakdown of WotC’s statement regarding the backlash. During this time, many other TTRPG companies have been making various announcements that the community are loving. Paizo and other companies launched the Open RPG Creative License (ORC), Chaosium has put a lot of their starter sets on sale for only $1, Wil Wheaton shared that his TTRPG of choice outside of Dungeons & Dragons is Fantasy AGE (one of my personal favorites), and the American Bar Association has made a statement backing Call of Cthulhu.
That’s right, the American Bar Association, a voluntary bar association of lawyers and law students, took a side in the TTRPG debate. Over on Facebook, they shared Linda Codega’s original post breaking the news of the OGL 1.1 and briefly talked about the implications, but then they said they prefer Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu! I love this! What’s even better is their reasoning. They state their love for Call of Cthulhu is because in the game “players can assume the roles of heroic lawyers (among other things), and where the ability to speak Latin and legal knowledge can be more powerful than a Tarrasque. Just like in real life.” It’s good to know the American Bar Association has good taste.
If you haven’t played Call of Cthulhu yourself, it is one of the starter sets available for only $0.99 right now through DriveThru RPG (affiliate link) and it’s a lot of fun. Our own Anna Williams has even shared a review for the starter set and having been part of those games, I can confirm that the game is a blast.
