THE BATMAN Director Matt Reeves Confirms That a Trilogy of Films is Still The Plan
In case you’ve been wondering if plans have changed for The Batman franchise since the first film was released in 2022, the answer is no.
As The Batman: Part II is gearing up for production, director Matt Reeves says they are still on course plan for Robert Pattinson's Caped Crusader to star in a trilogy.
The filmmaker was asked about it in an interview with Collider, and he responded: "Yes, that is still the plan. I mean, it’s sticking very closely to the path we envisioned."
We have no idea where the story is going to go, but we know the upcoming sequel will follow the events of the upcoming series The Penguin.
During a recent interview, Reeves teased: "We've shared [the script] as we've been going along with DC, and they're super excited. It's going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption and it goes into places [Bruce Wayne] couldn't even anticipate in the first one."
Reeves went on to indicate that certain "fantastical" characters are off the table. "What was important to me was to find a way to take these pop icons, these mythic characters that everybody knows, and translate it so that Gotham feels like a place in our world.
“We might push to the edge of fantastical, but we would never go into full fantastical. It's meant to feel quite grounded."
It’s also been reported that the story for the sequel will be at least partially based on Geoff Johns' Batman: Earth One. The first film took a certain amount of inspiration from Vol. 1, so I assume that means the sequel would be more influenced by Volumes 2 and 3.
Batman: Earth One is set in an alternate universe where Bruce Wayne is struggling to find his purpose as Gotham City's protector. With the help of Alfred Pennyworth, a former SAS operative, Bruce embarks on his journey to confront both familiar and new villains along the way.
Writer Mattson Tomlin previously said: "It's shooting next year. We're gearing up, and I will say that the bar just couldn't be higher.”
The story explores the psychology of Batman as he seeks justice in Gotham. Hush is also said to be one of the big villains in the movie.
The Batman: Part II is set to be released on October 2, 2026.
