THE BATMAN Writer Mattson Tomlin Says His GAME OF THRONES Prequel Series is Inspired By Napoleon and Alexander the Great
There’s another Game of Thrones spinoff series going into development and it’s coming from The Batman writer Mattson Tomlin.
The series has just been greenlit and it’s about Aegon the Conqueror, who is the first Targaryen king. The series is adapted from George R. R. Martin's Fire & Blood novel, which is a historical account of the Targaryen reign.
Tomlin talked about the series with Entertainment Weekly and said the series is inspired by historical figures such as Napoleon and Alexander the Great.
He said: "In speaking to George, it became really clear, 'This is history, treat this like it is what happened. Unlike the original series, I don't have thousands of pages to go off to adapt. I've got a couple hundred that I'm really focused on, and in those pages of Fire & Blood, there are a lot of clues.
The writer added: “It kind of turns into doing Napoleon or doing Alexander the Great or doing some great historical figure where we know a lot about the guy. We know where he was, we know who he conquered, we know who lived, and we know who died.
He added: “That all becomes the plot, and then it becomes my job to go, but what did it mean thematically? How did it feel? What were the emotions when this person died and this person lived? We don't have the context. We don't know what anybody said."
The description of the book reads: “With all the fire and fury fans have come to expect from internationally bestselling author George R. R. Martin, this is the first volume of the definitive two-part history of the Targaryens in Westeros.
“Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen—the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria—took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire and Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.
“What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why did it become so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What is the origin of Daenerys’s three dragon eggs? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle.”
This should make for a great and interesting series, and it’s not the only prequel series in the pipeline. HBO is also developing A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight which is based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg. Then, of course, there’s House of the Dragon which is getting a Season 2.
