THE BOOGEYMAN Director Teases Possible Sequel, a New Sam Raimi Project, and a THE HILLS HAVE EYES-Inspired Film

The director behind the recent adaptation of Stephen King’s The Boogeyman, Rob Savage, has got a couple of new film projects brewing and he also has an idea for a sequel to The Boogeyman that he’d like to tell. The Boogeyman was a great and terrifying horror movie that audiences seem to be enjoying.

During a recent interview with Discussing Film, Savage was asked about one potential film project that is in development with producer Sam Raimi, which is almost ready to go. There are also a couple of others he’s working on as well:

“Yeah, I’m really excited about the one with Sam. That one’s been a long journey, but we’re just getting it into a place where I think it’s about ready to go. I’ve actually got a couple of projects with Sam, there are a couple that haven’t been announced yet that are really exciting. I love working with him. There’s also an adaptation of a short I did called Salt, which is another kind of demonic horror that I’m really excited about and I think could be one of the ones that comes next.”

Savage went on to tease another film, which he describes as “The Hills Have Eyes for the next generation” and he’s developing that with the producers of Barbarian. In regards to that, he says:

“I’m actually doing a movie that I’m really f**king excited about which I think could be The Hills Have Eyes for the next generation. That’s an original movie that I’m working on with the same guys who did Barbarian actually, the same producers.

He also revealed he has a “great idea for a Boogeyman sequel,” saying:

“And then we’ve also got really f**king great idea for a Boogeyman sequel that everyone’s really excited about. It’s not what you would expect from a big studio movie sequel, but it’s really terrifying. I’m really excited about it. So if this film doesn’t bomb, maybe that could be next! That’s on the horizon as well.”

As a fan of the first movie, I do hope that it gets a sequel! I’d be curious to see how they handle it and why it’s not what we’d expect it to be.

In the film, “High school student Sadie Harper and her younger sister Sawyer are reeling from the recent death of their mother and aren’t getting much support from their father, Will, a therapist who is dealing with his own pain. When a desperate patient unexpectedly shows up at their home seeking help, he leaves behind a terrifying supernatural entity that preys on families and feeds on the suffering of its victims.”

The script for the film comes from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place) and Mark Heyman (Black Swan). It stars Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets), Chris Messina (Birds of Prey), Vivian Lyra Blair (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Marin Ireland (The Umbrella Academy), Madison Hu (Bizaardvark), LisaGay Hamilton (Vice), and David Dastmalchian (Dune).

The movie is being produced by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things), Dan Levine (Arrival), and Dan Cohen (The Adam Project). The Boogeyman opened in theaters this past weekend on June 2nd, 2023.
