THE BOOGEYMAN Posters Tease a Monster in The Closet and Stephen King Said Disney Would Be "F**king Stupid" Not to Release in Theaters
Disney’s 20th Century Studios has released four new character posters for the upcoming feature film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Boogeyman. The posters tease a monster in the closet that will terrorize the two sisters in the story. I recently got to watch the movie at CinemaCon, and it’s a great horror movie! It was so much more scary than I was expecting.
In the film, “High school student Sadie Harper and her younger sister Sawyer are reeling from the recent death of their mother and aren’t getting much support from their father, Will, a therapist who is dealing with his own pain. When a desperate patient unexpectedly shows up at their home seeking help, he leaves behind a terrifying supernatural entity that preys on families and feeds on the suffering of its victims.”
This movie was originally supposed to be released on Hulu, but after successful screenings with test audiences, they opted to release it in theaters, which was 100% the right choice! After seeing the film and how scary it is, this is definitely a movie that will be fun to watch on the big screen with an audience!
Director Rob Savage recently revealed that one of the people that might have helped the theatrical release happen was Stephen King himself. After showing the film to King, the director shared what King had to say about it. He told CB:
"When the movie tested so well, we decided it was time to get his input, so we rented out his favorite cinema in Maine. He knows what he doesn't like and if we'd have fked up his story, he'd have told us. But he sent a lovely almost-essay about how much he enjoyed the movie. And then the next day I wake up and there's an email in my inbox from Steve King and he said he's still thinking about the movie. He said a few more nice things and the nicest thing that he said was, 'They'd be f**king stupid to release this on streaming and not in cinemas.'"
One of the film’s stars, David Dastmalchian, previously praised the movie, calling it "one of the scariest films" he's seen in a long time. I like the sound of that! I’m actually really excited about this movie.
The movie was directed by Rob Savage (Host) from a screenplay by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place) and Mark Heyman (Black Swan). It stars Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets), Chris Messina (Birds of Prey), Vivian Lyra Blair (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Marin Ireland (The Umbrella Academy), Madison Hu (Bizaardvark), LisaGay Hamilton (Vice), and David Dastmalchian (Dune).
The movie is being produced by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things), Dan Levine (Arrival), and Dan Cohen (The Adam Project). The Boogeyman opens in theaters on June 2nd, 2023.
