THE BOROUGHS Trailer Teases Netflix’s Next Sci-Fi Obsession From the Minds Behind STRANGER THINGS

Netflix is gearing up to drop its next big sci-fi series, and if the newly released trailer is anything to go by, The Boroughs might just fill that strange, eerie void fans have been craving.

Set against a deceptively calm desert backdrop, The Boroughs introduces a mystery that feels familiar. There’s a creeping sense that something is off, and as the trailer unfolds, it becomes clear that the retirement community that the story is set in is hiding something far more sinister than early bird dinners and golf carts.

According to the official synopsis, “In the sun-drenched expanse of the New Mexico desert lies The Boroughs, a picturesque retirement community promising its residents the time of their lives.

“But for new arrival Sam Cooper (Alfred Molina), paradise feels more like a prison. Everything changes when a terrifying nighttime encounter reveals that something monstrous is stalking the manicured cul-de-sacs.

“Dismissed by the powers that be as just another confused old man, Sam finds unlikely allies in a band of neighborhood misfits: a sharp-witted former journalist, a spiritual seeker, a cynical music manager, and a brilliant doctor running out of options.

“Overlooked and underestimated, these unlikely heroes must band together to unravel the dark truth at the heart of The Boroughs before their time runs out.”

Alfred Molinastars in the series as Sam Cooper, a man whose instincts tell him something isn’t right even when no one else is willing to listen.

He’s joined by Geena Davis as Renee, along with an ensemble cast that includes Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, Bill Pullman, Carlos Miranda, Jena Malone, Seth Numrich, and Alice Kremelberg.

What stands out is the tone. While comparisons to Stranger Things are inevitable, The Boroughs leans into a slightly different energy. Instead of kids uncovering supernatural horrors, this time it’s a group of older, overlooked residents stepping into the unknown.

That shift gives the story a fresh angle, and it looks like the show is ready to explore themes of aging, relevance, and resilience while still delivering creepy sci-fi thrills.

The series comes from creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, who also serve as showrunners and executive producers alongside Hilary Leavitt and Ben Taylor. With that creative team and the Duffer Brothers involved, expectations are high.

The Boroughs will premiere on Netflix on May 21, 2026, and it’ll roll out as an eight-episode season.
