THE BOYS Creator Eric Kripke Addresses Series Finale Backlash: “I’m Sorry if I Disappointed You”

Fans are still debating the ending of The Boys, and now series creator Eric Kripke has weighed in on the intense reaction that followed the show's final episode.

The hit Prime Video series wrapped up its five-season run last month with Season 5 Episode 8, bringing one of television's most outrageous and unpredictable superhero stories to a close.

While many viewers were satisfied with how things ended, others took to social media to voice their frustration with the finale, sparking heated discussions across the internet.

Kripke is fully aware of the criticism. In fact, he says he sees plenty of it. But rather than viewing the backlash as a problem, he sees it as proof that people genuinely care about the series.

Speaking with TVLine, Kripke explained: “I’m not healthy in that I’m like, ‘Oh, I never look.’ I see it all. Obviously, there are a lot of unhappy people online, but there are two things I would say: First, I’m just glad people are passionate, legitimately.

“My job is to make people passionate about the work I put out. If they’re arguing about it and hating it and fighting, that’s all passion, man. You’re watching, and that’s all good. My job is to get an emotional reaction, not necessarily to dictate what that emotional reaction is.”

While some showrunners might be rattled by a loud online response, Kripke seems more focused on whether the story sparked a reaction at all.

He also pointed out that social media conversations can create the impression that an entire audience feels a certain way, when in reality they represent only a small slice of the show's overall viewership.

Kripke continued: “We have way north of 60 million viewers, so that makes the online storm, which feels very all-encompassing, actually a fraction of a single percentage point.

“Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, of course, and I’m sorry if I disappointed you, but it was the story I wanted to tell. You just have to put it into perspective of it being a reasonably small, vocal audience when the vast majority seem to be happily tuning in.”

What stands out most from his comments is that while he's willing to acknowledge disappointed fans, he isn't second-guessing the creative decisions that shaped the finale. The ending viewers saw was the one he intended to make, and despite the criticism, he remains comfortable with that choice.

That probably won't quiet the ongoing debates surrounding The Boys finale anytime soon. If anything, Kripke's comments may fuel even more discussion among fans who either loved or hated how the story concluded.
