The Costume For SHAZAM! Kept Changing During Production

When the first set photos from Shazam! showed Zachary Levi in costume, a lot of fans were quick to judge and say that it looked terrible and the movie was going to suck. Then, we were given our first official look at the costume, and that seemed to calm many fans down as they saw it and started to maybe have optimism about things. It turns out that the change in costume wasn’t necessarily just pre-editing vs post-editing. Director David F. Sandberg recently spoke to Film Riot Podcast and he explained that the costume was constantly changing during production. It’s possible that what we saw in the set photos was the final iteration, but there’s also a possibility that it was an earlier version of the costume and the costume changes helped it become a lot closer to the greatness that it looks like we’re getting. Here’s what Sandberg had to say about creating the costume:

Yes, there were a few iterations. And you sort of have to keep changing stuff even after we started shooting because you realize things... You shoot the first scene and Zach (Levi) is like, ‘You know, I can’t move my hands properly with these gauntlets.’ So, we had to redesign that, or like the boots kept falling apart so it’s like, ‘Oh well, I guess we have to do something different there,’ It was sort of a constant process of updating and making it work better.

You shoot the fabric [with] different lights. Before you even have a costume, you test fabric samples with different patterns on them and all that. His lightning bolt lights up, so there was a lot of test to get that right.

I am really excited about Shazam! and with the awesome fan posters that have been coming out, I cannot wait for an official trailer. Hopefully, San Diego Comic-Con will have something for us. Shazam! will be released in theaters on April 5, 2019.
