THE CROW Director Explains How the Film Is Not Just Any Hollywood Remake - "It’s a Very Scrappy Indie Movie"
Lionsgate’s The Crow remake has not been getting a lot of love from the fans. There seems to be a strong hatred for the project, especially from those who are fans of the original Alex Proyas and Brandon Lee movie.
Well, director Rupert Sanders is trying to sell audiences on his movie and convince fans that it’s not just another Hollywood remake.
While talking with Empire, Sanders explained: “There’s nothing to do with Hollywood in this movie at all. it’s a very scrappy indie movie.”
He went on to tease that they wanted to make a film that was closer to creator Jame O’Barr’s source material. By making more of an indie-style film, the creative team was “able to remain close to the centre and the darkness and the violence that’s in the graphic novel.”
The director went on to say: “The only reason we could do that is because it’s not a studio movie.” He also said that the budget constraints made the film better: “You have to be more adept at making things more efficiently, that are emotionally resonant, and not just spectacle.”
Regardless of what he’s saying here, the trailer did not sell me on the movie, and it doesn’t look like it does any special or unique. Expectations are super low, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
In the film: “Soulmates Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA Twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.”
This version of the movie stars Bill Skarsgård in the lead role, singer/actor FKA Twigs, Danny Huston (30 Days of Night), Laura Birn (Foundation), Sami Bouajila (A Son), and Jordan Bolger (The Woman King).
The Crow reboot will released in theaters on June 7, 2024.
