THE CROWN's Claire Foy Officially Cast as Lisbeth Salander in THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB

Claire Foy of Netflix's The Crown has officially been cast in the role of Lisbeth Salander in Sony Picture's adaptation of The Girl in the Spider's Web. This is the sequel/reboot of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo that is being directed by Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, Don't Breathe). It was previously reported that she was the frontrunner for the part, and it's good to see that she landed it. Foy is a talented actress and I think she'll be great in the role.

The director of the film offered the following statement on the casting of Foy:

“I couldn’t be more thrilled about Claire taking the reins of the iconic Lisbeth Salander. Claire is an incredible, rare talent who will inject a new and exciting life into Lisbeth. I can’t wait to bring this new story to a worldwide audience, with Claire Foy at its center.”

I believe David Fincher is still a producer on the film, which has a script that is being written by Alvarez, Steven Knight (Eastern Promises, Peaky Blinders) and Jay Basu (Metal Gear Solid). The movie will start production in January in Berlin and Stockholm. Here's a description of the story:

A genius hacker who has always been an outsider. A journalist with a penchant for danger. She is Lisbeth Salander, the girl with the dragon tattoo. He is Mikael Blomkvist, crusading editor of Millennium. One night, Blomkvist receives a call from a source who claims to have been given information vital to the United States by a young female hacker. Blomkvist, always on the lookout for a story, reaches out to Salander for help. She, as usual, has plans of her own. Together they are drawn into a ruthless underworld of spies, cybercriminals, and government operatives—some willing to kill to protect their secrets.

The movie, which is based on the book by Stieg Larsson, will be released on October 19th, 2018. What do you think about Claire Foy landing the lead role? Do you think she'll be able to pull it off?
