The Duffer Bros. Confirm Joseph Quinn’s Eddie Munson Is Dead in STRANGER THINGS Season 5

As Stranger Things fans prepare for the show’s epic fifth and final season, Matt and Ross Duffer are setting the record straight about one of the fandom’s biggest hopes, the return of Joseph Quinn as Eddie Munson. Unfortunately, it looks like the beloved D&D-loving metalhead is gone for good.

During a new interview with Empire, Matt Duffer confirmed that Quinn’s fan-favorite character won’t be climbing out of the Upside Down this time.

“I love that Joe Quinn is toying with people! But no, he’s dead. Joe is so busy anyway, that everyone should know he’s not coming back.

“He’s shot like five movies since! When the hell has he got time to come and shoot Stranger Things? No, sadly, RIP. He’s fully under that ground.”

Quinn’s Eddie Munson became an instant breakout in Stranger Things Season 4, leading the Hellfire Club, shredding on guitar in the Upside Down, and giving one of the show’s most memorable final stands.

His death scene, sacrificing himself to buy time for the others during the battle against Vecna’s Demobats, was a hard blow, and it sparked endless theories that he might somehow return.

To be fair, death isn’t always permanent in Hawkins. Dacre Montgomery’s Billy made a brief return in Season 4, appearing as a haunting vision. But in Eddie’s case, the Duffers have made it clear, there’s no resurrection waiting in Season 5.

While fans mourn the loss of Eddie, there’s still plenty to get excited about in the final chapter. The Duffers revealed that Linda Hamilton is joining the cast as Dr. Kay, a role that flips her usual heroic persona on its head. Duffer teased:

“She’s hyper-intelligent and intimidating. She’s a scientist but if she needs to, she can get into a fight and shoot a gun.”

Dr. Kay’s arrival signals more government interference as Stranger Things barrels toward its cinematic finale. Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven will once again find herself hunted, with Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelman, Cara Buono, Amybeth McNulty, Nell Fisher, Jake Connelly, and Alex Breaux rounding out the massive ensemble.

Volume 1 of the three-part final season of Stranger Things premieres November 26, and the Duffers have promised a truly cinematic farewell for the series that changed the face of streaming television.

Eddie Munson may be “fully under that ground,” but his legacy, and that epic guitar solo in the Upside Down, will live on forever.
