The Epic Fantasy Game BALDUR'S GATE 3 Used Movie Intimacy Coordinators For Its Sex Scenes
Larian Studios’ Baldur's Gate 3 is getting a lot of hype online and a lot of gamers seem to be talking about the sex and nudity in the fantasy game, which is set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. There was a massive talking point among fans, especially after the reveal of a sex scene involving a bear.
Well, it turns out that with all of the sex that is going to be involved in the game, the studio made sure to bring in movie-style intimacy coordinators for those scenes, which is apparently a first for a traditional video game.
Intimacy coordinators help plan out scenes that feature simulated sex or other intimate physical contact in movies and TV, and now games. The goal is to make sure that the actors involved with the scenes feel comfortable and that they aren’t feeling any pressure to do things or say things that they don’t want to do or haven’t consented to.
The BBC notes that Baldur's Gate 3 "employed specially trained intimacy coordinators to make sure actors feel comfortable during romantic scenes." Jennifer English, who plays the Cleric companion Shadowheart, said in a statement: "I never felt 'yuck' in a recording session at all," And I've got quite a low 'yuck' threshold."
Larian believes Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the first traditional video games to make use of intimacy coordinators. It makes sense that they would want to be safe with as much of this kind of stuff that the game is going to have.
In the game, “Gather your party, and return to the Forgotten Realms in a tale of fellowship and betrayal, sacrifice and survival, and the lure of absolute power. Mysterious abilities are awakening inside you, drawn from a Mind Flayer parasite planted in your brain. Resist, and turn darkness against itself. Or embrace corruption, and become ultimate evil.”
The game has an expansive story that is reported to have 17,000 possible variations to its ending, which is insane! “Abducted, infected, lost. You are turning into a monster, but as the corruption inside you grows, so does your power. That power may help you to survive, but there will be a price to pay, and more than any ability, the bonds of trust that you build within your party could be your greatest strength. Caught in a conflict between devils, deities, and sinister otherworldly forces, you will determine the fate of the Forgotten Realms together.”
It’s explained that no adventure will be the same: “The Forgotten Realms are a vast, detailed and diverse world, and there are secrets to be discovered all around you -- verticality is a vital part of exploration. Sneak, dip, shove, climb, and jump as you journey from the depths of the Underdark to the glittering rooftops of the Upper City. How you survive, and the mark you leave on the world, is up to you.”
This seems like it’s going to be an incredible gaming experience, even for those of you who aren’t into video game sex. You don’t have to get yourself involved in any kind of romance if you don’t want to.
The game will launch on August 3rd on PC and Mac and then on PS5 on August 31st. It will also eventually come to Xbox.
