The First SPACEBALLS: THE NEW ONE Poster is Here Along With Story Details

After decades of jokes, rumors, and fans endlessly quoting Spaceballs, the sequel is actually happening. The first official teaser poster for Spaceballs: The New One has been released, giving fans their first taste of the return to Mel Brooks' hilariously ridiculous galaxy.

The reveal came with the perfect tongue-in-cheek description: "We combed the desert and found the new teaser poster!" It's exactly the kind of humor you'd expect from a franchise that built its legacy by lovingly roasting Star Wars while creating some unforgettable comedy of its own.

Set to arrive 40 years after 1987's Spaceballs, the new film isn't pretending to be anything other than a gloriously over-the-top return to familiar territory. The official synopsis leans completely into that idea:

“Somehow, Dark Helmet has returned! Forty years after the events of the first Spaceballs, fifty years after the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, and one year after the events of The Devil Wears Prada 2, the galaxy is once again under threat.

“A threat so evil, so unstoppable, so completely lacking in any original ideas, that it has vowed to bring back the past… every last bit of it.”

It's a great setup that pokes fun at Hollywood's obsession with legacy sequels while embracing the fact that Spaceballs is joining the party.

The sequel stars Josh Gad, who has been championing the project for years, alongside returning franchise legend Mel Brooks. The cast also includes Lewis Pullman, though details about the characters they're playing are still being kept under wraps.

The film is directed by Josh Greenbaum and is based on the characters created by Mel Brooks, Thomas Meehan, and Ronny Graham.

While Spaceballs wasn't exactly a critics' favorite when it debuted in 1987, audiences embraced its goofy charm. That love has only grown over the years, and the film currently holds a strong 83% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.

It also turned a respectable profit during its original theatrical run, earning more than $38 million worldwide against a $22.7 million budget.

Producing the sequel are Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody, Mel Brooks, Josh Gad, Josh Greenbaum, and Kevin Salter, with Adam Merims, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez serving as executive producers.

There's still so much we don't know about Spaceballs: The New One, but I think it’s safe to assume that the first trailer for the film will drop during Comic-Con. Stay tuned for that!

Spaceballs: The New One is set to blast into theaters in 2027.
