THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Series Moving Forward at Amazon Studios with Showrunner
Amazon MGM Studios is moving forward with its previously announced series adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. It’s been announced that they’ve hired Veena Sud to lead the project as its showrunner.
Sud has had some experience working on dark crime and mystery dramas as she also worked on The Killing as the executive producer and showrunner. That series aired its first three seasons on AMC while a fourth debuted on Netflix. She most recently created and executive produced the Netflix series Seven Seconds, which dealt with police violence and racism in America. She also worked as a writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the CBS police procedural Cold Case.
When The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series was first announced, it was reported that it would not be “a sequel or continuation of the story from the books or the films into which they were adapted.” The series will instead take Salander and “place her in today’s world with a wholly new setting, new characters, and a new story.”
Amazon MGM Studios will produce along with Left Bank Pictures, which is based at Sony Pictures Television. The original Swedish film adaptations of these books with Noomi Rapace as Salander were fantastic. I also loved David Fincher’s take on it with Rooney Mara as Salander and Daniel Craig as Blomkvist. I would’ve liked to see that creative team make more. But, it was rebooted again with The Girl in the Spider’s Web starring Claire Foy.
Salander is just such a fascinating character so I get why people want to keep wanting to play in this sandbox. It seems like Sud has the skills to develop a solid series, but it’ll be awhile before we see anything from it.
