THE GOONIES 2 Writer Teases: “This Is the Movie I Want to See as One of Its Biggest Fans”
It still feels surreal to say, but a sequel to The Goonies is officially moving forward. After decades of rumors, false starts, and endless debates among fans and even the cast, The Goonies 2 is actually being written, and according to screenwriter Potsy Ponciroli, it’s almost complete.
While speaking with Deadline at the Venice Film Festival, Ponciroli revealed where he’s at in the writing process and the news is pretty encouraging.
“I have turned in a first draft, which was very well received, and I’m on a second draft, and I’m about 95% done with that, so we’re moving in the right direction.”
That’s a big step forward for a sequel that’s been lingering in development limbo for years. The late Richard Donner, who directed the original, often mentioned that he and Steven Spielberg had tossed around ideas for a follow-up, but it never came together.
Even members of the original cast were split, with some saying a return to the Goon Docks would never happen while others were open to grabbing their slick shoes and jumping back in.
Of course, with a sequel to such an iconic adventure movie, there’s always skepticism. Ponciroli is well aware of that but reassured fans that he’s not trying to replace the original.
“I know there’s a lot of ‘do we need a new Goonies’. But I’m the biggest fan of the original, it’s my favourite movie of all time. I’d never ‘redo’ The Goonies. To me, it was a story that never ended, so this is the movie I want to see as one of its biggest fans.”
As for plot details, things are still being kept secret. There’s no word yet on whether any of the original cast will return, though many fans expect that if they do, it will likely involve their children heading off on a brand-new adventure. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what Ponciroli and the studio have in store.
After forty years, the Goonies really never say die, and it looks like their next treasure hunt might finally be just around the corner.
