The IT: WELCOME TO DERRY Finale Will Leave You “Destroyed,” and There’s a “Trick” to It All
The terror of It: Welcome to Derry has only just begun, but according to the show’s creators, fans should brace themselves for an ending that’s going to hit hard.
The new HBO prequel set in Stephen King’s chilling universe is only two episodes in, yet Barbara Muschietti and Andy Muschietti are already teasing that the finale will be an emotional gut-punch, and there’s more going on beneath the surface than anyone realizes.
When speaking with Collider, Barbara didn’t mince words about what’s coming, saying the ending will leave viewers “destroyed.” Andy added that the conclusion will carry a powerful sense of closure.
“There's a feeling of closure. Of course, everybody that knows the movies knows that It is alive in 1989, but there is a trick. There's something that happens and it's related to the reason we're telling the story backwards.”
The idea of the story being told in reverse raises all sorts of questions about how the events of the show connect to the two It films. If Pennywise is still alive decades later, what exactly happens in 1962 that sets the stage for the horrors to come?
Andy offered a small but chilling clue.
“Nothing is what it looks like in this world, let me put it that way. I can't be too clear about it.”
That cryptic warning fits the twisted logic of Derry, which is a place where nightmares seep into reality and nothing stays buried for long.
Set in 1962, It: Welcome to Derry follows a new group of kids who become caught in one of Pennywise’s earlier cycles of terror. The first two episodes have already delivered plenty of haunting imagery and emotional chaos, hinting that things will only escalate as the story unfolds.
With eight episodes planned, the series looks ready to expand the It mythology in unsettling and awesome new ways. If the Muschiettis’ hints are anything to go by, Welcome to Derry is setting us up for something devastating, revealing, and connected to why the evil of Pennywise never truly dies.
