Another little nugget of information has surfaced regarding director Todd Phillips' upcoming Joker origin movie. Apparently, the Joker's mother is going to have a part to play in the story and producers are looking to cast a big actress in the role.
According to The Wrap's Umberto Gonzalez, the studio already offered the role to Frances McDormand, but she turned it down.

Even though McDormand turned down the role, it gives us an idea of the kind of big name actress they want to play the character. The fact they are looking for this kind of actress tells us that the role in the film must be a substantial one. The Joker's mom has never really been explored before, so this will certainly make for an intriguing element of the story.
It was also recently revealed that Bruce Wayne's father would play a part in the film, but not much is known about how he will be utilized.
The studio has described the story for the Joker film as being an "exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale." The film is also said to be going against the grain of most comic book movies and that it's "meant to be different from other comic book superhero movies."
I love that Joaquin Phoenix is playing the Joker and he will be joined by Robert De Niro. It's going to be interesting to see what other actors they end up casting in the film.
