THE LAST OF US Season 3 Officially Greenlit by HBO
Before fans even get a chance to dive into Season 2 of The Last of Us, HBO is already locking in Season 3.
The news comes just days before the second season premieres, and this early renewal speaks volumes about HBO’s confidence in the series. Not that it’s surprising. The Last of Us has gone from being one of the most celebrated video games of all time to one of the most talked-about shows on TV.
Season 1 covered the events of the original The Last of Us game in its entirety, and while there’s only one more game to adapt with The Last of Us Part II, that doesn’t mean there’s only one season left.
That sequel is a much more sprawling narrative, and from early on, it was confirmed that the adaptation would be stretched across multiple seasons. HBO is clearly wasting no time laying the groundwork.
Showrunner Craig Mazin and series co-creator Neil Druckmann released a joint statement about the Season 3 news:
“The story of Part II, like the first game, is more than a season’s worth of television. With great pride in our cast and crew, HBO has graciously agreed to renew the show for a third season. We are thrilled to be able to continue the story of Ellie and Abby.”
There’s no release date yet for Season 3, but chances are a writer’s room is either already at work or about to be. Season 2 had a two-year gap from the first season, which wasn’t entirely by choice. The 2023 writers and SAG-AFTRA strikes brought everything to a standstill for around six months.
Even so, casting was already underway before the strikes, and with production back on track, the hope is that we won’t have to wait quite as long for the next chapter.
Given the depth of Part II and the pace at which HBO seems to be moving, it’s very possible we’re in for a fourth season too. For now, though, it’s just a matter of seeing where Season 2 leaves off and how the next season picks up the pieces.
