THE LAST OF US Showrunner Says One Season 2 Scene with Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal Was “Pretty Spectacular”
The Last of Us Season 2 isn’t even out yet, and it’s already punching us in the emotional gut, at least according to showrunner Craig Mazin. During a recent press conference, Mazin reflected on a key scene from the upcoming season that holds a special place in his heart, one that fans of The Last of Us Part II will instantly recognize.
Mazin said: “I mean, this is not a spoiler... In the trailer, you see Pedro and Bella both by the space capsule in the museum, and that scene is the first thing that [co-showrunner Neil Druckmann] ever showed me from Part 2.
“It's beautiful, and watching them kind of inhabit that and make it their own was pretty spectacular. Pretty spectacular, pretty good.”
If you’ve played the game, you already know the museum moment he’s talking about. It’s the flashback where Joel surprises Ellie with a birthday trip to the Wyoming Museum of Science and History.
What starts as a charming exploration of dusty dinosaur displays turns into something intimate and cosmic when the two step into an old space capsule. Joel gives Ellie a recording of a space launch and tells her to close her eyes.
She listens, imagines liftoff, and we watch this perfect father-daughter moment unfold that’s quiet and joyful.
Mazin’s praise wasn’t limited to the scene itself. He specifically highlighted Ramsey and Pascal for the way they stepped into that emotional space: “Watching them kind of inhabit that and make it their own was pretty spectacular.”
Pascal, too, was emotionally affected by filming, saying: “My mindset was grateful for being back, yet, at the same time, this experience, more than any other I've had, is hard for me to separate what the characters are going through and how it makes me feel in a way that isn't very healthy.”
That’s one of the things I love about this story about it keeps a tight grip on you as your experiencing it. And if Mazin and Pascal are this emotionally wrecked already, it might be time for the rest of us to stock up on tissues.
The Last of Us season 2 hits HBO on April 13.
