THE MARVELS Actress Iman Vellani Describes Two Scenes That Were Almost Very Different in the Film
The Marvels was a fun intergalactic chapter in the MCU, with its post-credits scene creating ripples that will effect the upcoming storyline in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It followed Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel Iman Vellani as they teamed up to fix the glitch that caused them to switch places when using their powers. They then went on to fight against Dar-Benn, who was trying to steal the power of the earth’s sun to rejuvenate her own planet.
The film had a lot of great scenes, and according to Kamala Khan actress Iman Vellani, a couple of them could have been different. Talking to Yahoo Entertainment (via CBM), Vellani confirmed that unlike in the film when Monica closed the tear in the parallel universe made by Dar-Benn, an original draft saw Kamala Khan and Carol Danvers helping Monica do the job. And in that version, right before Monica got trapped in another reality, the plan was for her to officially be named "Photon."
Vellani explained:
"It was a cool moment, but I think they took it out for a good reason. It wouldn't make sense tonally if Monica is about to sacrifice herself and we're like, 'But your code name!' You don't even need the words - she was Photon in that moment. And I don't think Captain Marvel was even called Captain Marvel in her own movie!"
She also went on to talk about the film’s first scene that took place at the end of the movie, wherein we saw Hawkeye’s apprentice, Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) walk into her apartment to find a figure sitting in the shadows, similarly to the way we first saw Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) meet Tony Stark/Iron Man. It was Kamala/Ms. Marvel, and she was there to recruit Kate into the Young Avengers. But we almost saw the group already formed. Vellani described an early draft of that scene, saying:
"Yes, it was pretty much the same lines...They were trying to incorporate as many as they [could] but I think it's best that we see Kamala form the Young Avengers, starting from the beginning. There was a version [of the scene] where they already existed and I was like, 'That doesn't make any sense.' And they were like, 'We know, we're not going to film [that version]. But yeah, it was fun and I loved working with Hailee for just that one day that I got to meet her, see her and talk to her. It was nice to have someone to relate to and talk about the super suits and the future of where the Young Avengers lies. I'm very excited and hopeful that leads to something real."
I am hopeful for the future of the MCU, and the exciting new stories that were teased in this film. Which Marvel storyline are you most excited to see play out?
