THE MONKEY Director Osgood Perkins Has a Chillingly Brilliant STAR WARS Pitch
Director Osgood Perkins has been neck deep in the horror genre with films like Longlegs and The Monkey, and he just dropped one of the most interesting Star Wars pitches in years.
During a recent Reddit AMA, a fan asked him: "Is there a story you wish you had the budget or technology to make into a movie?"
Perkins’ response was simple but awesome: "The collected dreams and nightmares of Darth Vader told as short stories."
That one sentence alone paints a wild and unique vision unlike anything Star Wars has done before, an anthology of Vader’s most horrifying subconscious nightmarish terrors, told through the insane and creative mind of Perkins.
Perkins has already proven he can craft dread-inducing, psychological horror with the films he’s made, and bringing that eerie sensibility to Star Wars, especially through the nightmares of a character as tormented as Vader, could result in something awesome and unsettling.
Anakin Skywalker’s life is a long string of trauma as he was ripped from his mother as a child, disillusioned by the Jedi, manipulated by Palpatine, and ultimately burned alive on Mustafar during a fight with his Master after losing everything he cared about.
That’s just before he spends years as Darth Vader, hunting Jedi, committing atrocities, and living in a suffocating iron lung. If anyone in the Star Wars universe is plagued by relentless terrifying nightmares, it’s Vader.
Perkins’ concept could tap into that psychological horror, visions of the people he’s lost, twisted versions of the choices he’s made, the ghostly torment of Obi-Wan, or even terrifying, surreal glimpses of what he might become had he gone down a different path.
I doubt that Disney and Lucasfilm would pull the trigger on a project like this, showcasing a different nightmare Vader endures, but it could make for a limited comic book series. I can see that as a possibility.
But, I sure would love to see a Star Wars horror movie, and diving into the haunted mind of Vader would make a good one.
