THE MUMMY 4 Brings Back John Hannah Alongside Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz

The Mummy 4 has added another familiar face to the mix. John Hannah, who fans will remember as the fast-talking, slightly shady but lovable Jonathan Carnahan from the original films, is officially returning.

He’ll be reuniting with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, bringing the original trio back together for a new adventure.

This addition is sure to get longtime fans excited, but it’s creative team behind the project that is really interesting. The film is being directed by the duo known as Radio Silence, aka Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmakers behind Ready or Not and the Scream revival films.

The script comes from David Coggeshall, who previously wrote The Family Plan. Universal is backing the film, with a release date set for May 19, 2028.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, which isn’t surprising as the project is still in early development. But it will be interesting to see how this revival of the franchise turns out, and see how it will continue the evolution of the film’s that came before.

Hannah’s return is especially fun considering how much his character added to the original trilogy. He was a strong comic relief, but was also part of the heart of those films. He had chemistry with Fraser and Weisz.

Outside of the desert sands and cursed tombs, Hannah has kept busy with a wide range of roles. His film credits include Sliding Doors, Another Mother’s Son, and Four Weddings and a Funeral, the latter earning him a BAFTA nomination.

On the TV side, he’s appeared in Black Mirror Season 6, Netflix’s The Decameron, and HBO’s The Last of Us. He’s also wrapped production on Bedlam with Peter Serafinowicz and Scott Adkins, appears in the 2026 comedy The Incomer alongside Domhnall Gleeson, and is set to star in the upcoming series Death in Benidorm.

Behind the scenes, Universal has Jay Polidoro and Jacqueline Garell overseeing production, helping guide the return of one of the studio’s most recognizable adventure franchises.

With the original cast reuniting and a directing team that knows how to reinvigorate iconic properties, this new take on The Mummy is something for fans to be excited about.

Whether it leans into horror, action, or that classic swashbuckling charm, one thing’s clear… the tomb is opening again.
