THE OFFICE Co-Creator Greg Daniels Says a Reboot Is Off the Table, but He'd Be Intrigued by a Sister Show
Just last month, we reported on rumors that The Office may get a reboot of sorts, with the show’s showrunner and co-creator, Greg Daniels, giving a response about the possibility that truly sounded like he was just playing it cool, and it was really something that was being considered. But now he has come out and said that a reboot is absolutely out of the question, though he does admit to feeling intrigued by another series that takes place in the same world as The Office.
In a recent interview with The Wrap, Daniels explained why he feels it would be a mistake to replicate the iconic mockumentary, saying:
“I feel like we ended that story beautifully. The characters had closure. I would never want to redo that same show with a different cast, because I think we got the luckiest cast, the best cast ever, in TV, to do that show. So the notion of a reboot is not of interest.”
That cast and writing and chemistry on set really was lightning in a bottle. He’s right in believing they couldn’t do better with the exact same story, and just new actors. He went on to add:
“Something like the notion of this documentary crew doing a documentary about a different subject. That, I think, could be intriguing and creative. But I don’t even know what you would call that. I don’t know if that’s like a sister show or something."
It sounds like he’s thinking something like Parks and Recreation, which he also produced. That series was also great. So maybe Daniels just needs to bring in some writers and directors who know this format, and he needs to make another great documentary-style series. I’d definitely be down to watch!
