The Reasons Behind Netflix Canceling LUKE CAGE Reportedly Revealed
This weekend we learned that Netflix had cancelled Luke Cage. It was quite a shock to a lot of fans. Some fans theorized that the reason the series was cancelled was due to poor ratings. But, apparently there’s a lot more too it than that.
Since a lot of fans have been wondering why the series was cancelled, I thought I’d share some additional information from THR. They claim there are numerous reasons for the show being cancelled and it may not have to do with the ratings of the show at all.
According to the report, a source claims that one of the reasons the show was cancelled was due to creative differences. It’s not made clear if it those differences were between showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker and Marvel TV, or between Netflix and Marvel. Another reason given for the series being cancelled is that the Marvel and Netflix couldn’t agree on terms for a third season.
We’ll never really know if rating were the issue because Netflix doesn’t release their viewership numbers.
Marvel and Netflix issued a joint statement over the weekend after the series was cancelled, saying:
"Unfortunately, Marvel's Luke Cage will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem's Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series."
The showrunner of the series took to Twitter to thank the creative team and the fans of the series saying:
"A lot [of] memories. A lot of individual thank you calls to make. Just want to say thank you to Marvel, Netflix, the best Writer’s room, cast, crew, the Midnight Hour, all those who graced the stage at Harlem’s Paradise and the most incredible fan base in the world. Forward always…"
It was teased that we may have not seen the last of Iron Fist and Luke Cage and there have been rumors that the show could continue on Disney’s streaming service. I’d personally love to see Marvel take the characters and develop a Heroes For Hire series!
