The Report That THE GOONIES 2 Is Happening Is "Not Real" According to Original Cast Member Martha Plimpton
Earlier this month The Sun reported that The Goonies 2 was happening and that it would be shooting next summer with several of the original cast members returning.
This news went viral and spread all over the internet with people reporting this as fact. We never shared it because we know that the report was full of shit.
Anyway, in response to fans asking about this and if it’s true, original cast member Martha Plimpton recently took to social media to say that this is not real and that a sequel to Goonies is not happening.
She said: “People, there is no Goonies 2 script, there is no one ‘attached.’ Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real.” She then told people to go out and vote.
Corey Feldman also shared in a post on X that he had “no information” whatsoever that a sequel was in development.
Look, there has been talk of a Goonies sequel for years! Back in 2014 Richard Donner made a hard push to get the cast together to make it happen, and said: “I’m 1,000% certain there will be a sequel. I will bet my children on it.” Donner passed away in 2021 at 91 years old.
The most recent real attempt to make it happen came from Adam F. Goldberg, who had a pitch meeting with Richard Donner three years ago before he passed away, but nothing ever came of it.
Steven Spielberg, the film's executive producer, was previously asked about the possibility of the sequel by Josh Gad during The Goonies reunion, and he explained that the creative team revisits the idea of a sequel every so often before they brush it off:
“Chris and Dick and I and Lauren [Shuler Donner] have had a lot of conversations about it, and every couple of years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold water.
“The problem is the bar that all of you raised on this genre. I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies we made in the ‘80s.”
Now, there’s a small chance that a sequel could happen one day, but as of right now, nothing is in development.
