THE RINGS OF POWER Season 3 is Bringing Sauron's Biggest Moment to Life and It Was an Emotional Challenge to Film
Fans of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power have known this moment was coming ever since the series began, and now it's finally happening. Season 3 will take viewers to one of the most defining events in all of Middle earth history as Sauron forges the One Ring inside the fires of Mount Doom.
It's the moment that changes everything, and according to the creative team, bringing it to life turned into the biggest filmmaking challenge they've faced on the series.
Speaking with Empire Magazine, showrunner Patrick McKay teased just how massive this sequence is going to be, saying: "This is the season where Sauron makes the One Ring in the volcano."
McKay went on to explain just how much work went into creating the scene saying it was "the single most ambitious, technically challenging sequence we’ve ever done on the show. Charlie’s performance is absolutely staggering. We never could have prepared for it."
That's a pretty incredible claim considering Season 2 delivered a massive multi episode battle sequence that reportedly took weeks to shoot. If this new sequence tops that in both scale and execution, viewers could be in for one of the series' most unforgettable episodes.
Of course, none of it works without Sauron himself, and Charlie Vickers sounds like someone who understood the weight of stepping into one of Tolkien's most iconic moments.
Reflecting on filming the sequence, Vickers shared: "The first day I walked onto that set, I cried. "What an amazing privilege and honor to be able to tell that story."
It's easy to understand why. The forging of the One Ring isn't just another fantasy spectacle. It's one of the defining moments in The Lord of the Rings mythology, setting in motion the events that eventually lead to the War of the Last Alliance and, thousands of years later, Frodo's quest to destroy the Ring.
There's still a bit of a wait before fans can return to Middle earth, but the promotional campaign is definitely picking up speed. With the series heading to San Diego Comic-Con, new reveals have been arriving on a regular basis.
We recently got our first look at Gandalf wearing his iconic hat, and reports have also surfaced claiming that a fourth season is already in development, with production potentially beginning sooner rather than later.
If Season 3 delivers on what McKay and Vickers are teasing, fans are about to witness one of Tolkien's most legendary chapters finally brought to the screen.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 premieres on November 11.
