THE RINGS OF POWER Season 3 Promises a Fresh Start With a Five-Year Time Jump and a More Classic LORD OF THE RINGS Feel
Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is making some major changes for Season 3, and the fantasy series is finally moving closer to the classic Middle-earth storytelling that fans loved in Peter Jackson's films.
With a five-year time jump, a war consuming Middle-earth, and Sauron is forging the One Ring, the upcoming season is being described as something of a soft reboot. The creative team also hopes it will give new viewers a chance to jump into the story without having to watch the previous two seasons.
Co-showrunner Patrick McKay explained to IGN, that the time jump allows the series to begin a new chapter while moving the story toward one of the most important events in Tolkien's mythology.
"We really love the idea of throwing the viewer in, in a way that is a completely fresh start. J.D. Payne, my co-showrunner and I, we're huge admirers of shows that have done this kind of [time jump] before, like Battlestar Galactica and Halt and Catch Fire. That can be really fun for a viewer."
"Hopefully, this season is a great jumping-on point for fans," he continued. "And it truly starts with people talking about the One Ring."
That should get Lord of the Rings fans excited, especially those who have been waiting for the series to get to the heart of Sauron's rise to power.
Season 3 picks up five years after the fall of Eregion, with Middle-earth in terrible shape. Sauron's armies have conquered much of the land, leaving only a handful of strongholds standing against him.
The Dwarves have sealed themselves inside Khazad-dûm, while the Elven realms of Lindon and Rivendell remain protected by their Three Rings. Meanwhile, Sauron is working from his newly completed tower of Barad-dûr in Mordor, determined to create the ultimate weapon that will bring everyone under his control.
The One Ring is now his obsession, and the stakes are about to get a whole lot higher. McKay also explained that the extra breathing room between seasons helped the creative team approach Season 3 with renewed energy. The first two seasons were produced back-to-back, with production also making the move from New Zealand to the UK.
"I think our goal for Season 3 is really to blow the doors off the hinges," McKay said. "We're really proud of Seasons One and Two, but... for us, now, in some ways, we're starting a whole new story. This is turning the page on the show."
Another interesting addition to the season is Marnouk, an Orc who defects from Sauron's army and makes his way to Rivendell. His arrival gives the Elves valuable information about the Dark Lord's plans while introducing a new perspective on what Sauron's victory would mean for the Orcs themselves.
"He claims to know all kinds of things about Sauron's strategy and reveals to the Elves that Sauron is trying to make the One Ring," McKay teased.
"And if he succeeds, he will defeat everyone, including the Orcs, because the One Ring will now make them subservient to him, slaves to him forever, and there'll never be another Orc rebellion like Adar, who died last season, led."
This is an interesting direction for the story, especially after the series spent considerable time exploring Adar and his desire to give the Orcs a future of their own. Now they're facing the possibility of becoming permanent slaves to Sauron, with no hope of another rebellion.
The decision to give Season 3 a fresh starting point also makes sense for Amazon. The first two seasons received mixed reactions from fans, and with the studio reportedly committed to a five-season run, there's plenty of incentive to bring back viewers who may have lost interest.
I'm curious to see whether this new approach can win over fans who weren't sold on the earlier seasons. With Sauron tightening his grip on Middle-earth and the creation of the One Ring moving to the forefront, the series has some great material to work with.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 premieres on Prime Video on November 11, 2026, with the first four episodes. Episodes five and six arrive November 18, followed by the final two episodes on November 25.
