The Russo Bros. Tell Fans Not To "Expect Everything To Move Forward in a Linear Fashion in the Marvel Universe."
Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo have some interesting things to say about the future of the MCU. A lot of fans assume that because there are sequels to Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Guardians of the Galaxy that characters will be brought back to life for those films. While that still may be true, during a recent interview with Huffington Post, the directors cast a shadow of doubt on that theory. Anthony cryptically explains:
"Here’s the thing, I think it’s important to remember anything is possible in the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe]. Just because there’s a sequel on the books doesn’t mean … people become accustomed to time moving linearly in the MCU. That doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. There’s a lot of very inventive ways of where the story can go."
Joe adds:
"There’s four years between Guardians 2 and Infinity War. That’s a long time, and a lot of Guardians stories to tell. Again, as Anthony said, don’t expect everything to move forward in a linear fashion in the Marvel universe."
The next two Marvel films aren't told in a linear fashion. Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel both take place prior to the events of Infinity War to help set up Avengers 4. This means there's a chance that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Black Panther 2, and the Spider-Man sequel could also be set prior to those events. I don't know if that's what Marvel is planning, but it is a possibility. In fact, there's already a rumor about the Spider-Man sequel being set prior to the events of Infinity War.
Infinity War writer Stephen McFeely previously said, "Death is death, If we say goodbye to some characters, we will say it permanently." It sounds like the Russo's are sticking to that. Of course, they may just be saying this stuff to throw fans off! We'll eventually find out when we see what happens in Avengers 4.
