THE X-FILES Creator Chris Carter Hints That The Show Could Continue Without Gillian Anderson

After Gillian Anderson announced and confirmed that The X-Files Season 11 would be her last, creator Chris Carter said that he wouldn't continue the series without her.

“For me, ‘The X-Files’ is Mulder and Scully. I think if it were without Scully, I wouldn’t do it. That’s not my ‘X-Files.'”

Well, it seems he's had a change of heart and is actually considering moving forward with the series without her. During a recent interview with Digital Spy, Carter teased:

"I think that certainly The X-Files has more life in it, there are more stories to tell, with Gillian or without. I'm sorry to see her go, I've never actually considered doing this show without her, so is this the end? It's the end of something, I don't know if it's the beginning of something new. But certainly we will have to all put our heads together and figure out where to go from here."

That certainly sounds to me like maybe The X-Files won't end after Anderson leaves. As a hardcore fan of the show, I'm torn by this news. Sure, it'd be great to see the series continue, but to move forward without Anderson would be weird. The series would definitely be something different, but would that be a good different or a bad different? Only time will tell. When asked if he knew that Anderson was going to make the announcement, he said:

"I wasn't aware when she announced it that she was going to say it, although for quite a while I've wondered how long David [Duchovny] and Gillian really wanted to do this show after doing it for 25 years. They've played these characters, considering all the material that ended up on the cutting room floor, for probably 6-7,000 hours of their lives. That's a whole lot of time and so considering that and considering that they're still relatively young folk, I'm sure they have other things they want to do."

I wonder what Carter is thinking about in terms of keeping the show moving forward. I'd love to get into his head and see what he's got going on in there. Personally, if they did decide to do something different, I'd want to see a prequel series based on the early FBI education and career of Fox Mulder.

While we wait to see what happens with the series next, I'll just be enjoying the rest of Season 11!
