There's a TRON: LEGACY Producer Still Hoping For TRON 3, Would You Want To See It Happen?

I’m a huge fan of the TRON franchise and I was one of those people who actually really loved what TRON: Legacy delivered. It was such an awesome continuation of the original film and the fact that the sequel ended up getting made in the first place was kind of a miracle.

There was another sequel in development and right as everyone was back on board and the time came for Disney to give it the official greenlight, it ended up getting canceled instead. I was pretty bummed out by that. I previously talked to one of the producers of the film and he said that it was so close to being pushed through and he says it would’ve been an incredible sequel!

Well, there’s another producer that recently talked to /Film about TRON 3 and he’s still hoping that it will happen. That producer is Justin Springer, and he said:

“Look, I will never stop being interested in making a TRON movie. I love the opportunity to do it. It’s a title that never really goes away internally. There’s always people around the company who like it a whole lot. And so, we’ll see what happens. It would be great to get the opportunity to do it again. It’s interesting – what I will say is that I think it continues to be relevant both in its ideas and also just the visual iconography of it. I think people are still are interested in it and it still feels contemporary to me. So it’s just about finding the right time, right script, and the right people at the studio saying “yes.” You know, just the usual.”

Dumbo writer Ehren Kruger also chimed in saying that, “All you need is for fans to demand it, just like last time.” So, is the demand still there? Do fans want to see TRON 3 happen? I sure as hell do! I bet if Disney released a concept trailer for the third film, it would generate the excitement they are looking for.

Director Joseph Kosinski previously talked about the story for the sequel, saying:

"The movie was called, 'TRON: Ascension'… What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we’ve usually seen. So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of TRON, or multiple worlds of TRON, and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of TRON in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But there’s also a really interesting character study in Quorra and a 'Stranger in a Strange Land,' trying to figure out where she belongs having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in."

He went on to explain what Quorra would have been able to do in the real world as the first digital human hybrid:

"I don’t see them having superpowers. I don’t see them being able to shoot lasers from their eyes or do what I would consider to be a superhero-type movie. But in her DNA itself, her being the first digital-human hybrid, there’s something in her being that allows objects from inside the Grid to exist in the real world and makes them permanent, so that was the idea. So I think the idea is strong, it’s just a matter of the right time and the right place and the stars aligning as they have to do for movies."

Yeah, I would have loved to see this story get told! I guess there’s always still a chance if someone in charge at Disney wants to do it. Hell, with Disney+ launching soon it’s be cool to see the sequel reworked and turned into a TV series! I’d totally be up for that!

I just hope that we don’t have to wait another 20 years before we see another sequel. Do you want to see another TRON sequel get made?
