Timothy Olyphant Says THE ADVENTURES OF CLIFF BOOTH Perfectly Blends Quentin Tarantino and David Fincher’s Filmmaking Styles
One of the biggest reasons movie fans are excited about The Adventures of Cliff Booth is because it brings together two filmmakers whose styles couldn't be more recognizable.
Quentin Tarantino wrote the script, while David Fincher stepped in to direct, creating one of the most fascinating creative pairings we've seen in years.
The film picks up with Brad Pitt returning as Cliff Booth, the effortlessly cool stuntman introduced in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.
This time around, Cliff has moved on from doubling for TV star Rick Dalton and is working as a Hollywood fixer, a job that promises to lead him into all kinds of unpredictable situations. Along the way, audiences will also get more glimpses into Cliff's colorful past through a series of flashbacks.
For movie lovers, seeing Tarantino's writing filtered through Fincher's filmmaking style is a interesting and cool scenario. Pitt stepping back into one of his best roles only makes the project even more exciting.
One familiar face returning is Timothy Olyphant, who appeared in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood as real-life actor James Stacy from the classic Western series Lancer.
He's reprising that role in The Adventures of Cliff Booth, giving him the rare opportunity to experience firsthand what happens when a Tarantino screenplay becomes a Fincher movie.
While promoting his upcoming Apple TV+ crime thriller Lucky, Olyphant spoke with ComicBook about working on the film and what it was like seeing those two distinct filmmaking styles come together.
“Well, the cool thing about the experience, and some of the stuff I’ve seen, is that both those things are very alive at the same time, and it’s such a cool mix.
“It is a Quentin movie through and through. You hear that dialogue, it’s like hearing a great [Rolling] Stones song, you know, it’s the Stones and like, you know that’s Keith Richards’ two chords.”
He went on to explain how Fincher's influence gives the project its own identity while still honoring Tarantino's unmistakable voice.
“And so it has that. But then the Fincher brings this… He puts such a stamp on it, the look of it, the feel of it, the music… It’s so clearly a Fincher film. And so to see those two things sort of bouncing off each other at once? It’s pretty cool.”
Tarantino's dialogue has always had its own rhythm, while Fincher is known for his meticulous visual style and precision. Seeing those creative approaches collide could make The Adventures of Cliff Booth one of the most interesting films either filmmaker has been involved with.
The cast surrounding Pitt is also packed with talent. Alongside Olyphant, the film features Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, Holt McCallany, and several others.
Netflix is producing The Adventures of Cliff Booth, which will receive a limited IMAX theatrical run beginning November 25 before making its streaming debut on December 23.
