Todd McFarlane Opens Up About Casting is His SPAWN Movie and Says it Doesn't Need a Big Star
Remember that time when Todd McFarlane said he wanted to cast Leonardo DiCaprio in the role of Twitch in his new R-rated Spawn movie? Well, it sounds like he has lowered his expectations.
Over the years, McFarlane has been teasing that a big A-list, Oscar-winning actor wanted in on the film. Many assumed that actor was Jamie Foxx. We have no idea if this is an actor that McFarlane is still looking at, but it sounds like it doesn't matter because the director says that the movie doesn't need a big star to make the movie work.
When talking about who could play the title character in the film, he says that he's talked with "some big A-list actors" but won't say who:
"I don't want to put anybody on the spot there. A lot of creep movies just work on their own without a big star. Think about your two or three favorite creepiest movies, most of them don't have stars in it, or they weren't the stars probably that they maybe became later. I know we're going to have that conversation of, let's just do the creep, and it's just going to work on its own."
When talking about the casting of Twitch, he explained:
"The lead character in the movie, which is a cop, at worst I just need somebody that will act their ass off, that is just a great actor. That opens up the bucket a little bit wider than saying you need an A-lister to put on, so we'll see."
Since the movie only has a budget of $10 million, and they aren't paying the actors out of that budget, it might be hard to get an A-list star if they wanted to, unless that star is a passionate fan that believes in the project.
Chances are we won't see anyone like DiCaprio or Foxx join Spawn and that's fine. Mcfarlane is right, a movie like this doesn't need A-list stars. If the story is solid and they cast people who are decent actors, the movie could still turn out great.
If the movie does well at the box office and makes a decent profit, which shouldn't be hard to do with its low budget, the plan is to make more Spawn movie and expand the franchise even more.
"If we can do it and get the opening that I think we can get; if we get the same number of people that came 20 years ago, the same number of people, in today's dollars that's $40,000,000. Then it will allow you again to go, let's get to the next one, let's get to the next one, let's get to the next one. I've told people that at the end of the first movie there's two directions you can go."
I really hope this works out for everyone who is involved. I want this Spawn movie to be good so that it succeeds. Do you think McFarlane will pull it off?
