Tom Cruise and Doug Liman Reportedly Lining Up EDGE OF TOMORROW 2 Shoot for This Fall
It looks like the time loop might finally start spinning again as it seems Edge of Tomorrow 2 is gaining real momentum, with new reports suggesting Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman are preparing to roll cameras as soon as this fall.
According to insider DanielRPK, the long-gestating sequel at Warner Bros. is actively moving forward, with plans lining up for a potential fall shoot. That timing would put it right before Cruise jumps into production on Top Gun 3, making this a pretty packed stretch for the actor.
This update lines up with earlier reports that hinted at a late 2026 production start. Either way, the important takeaway is that the project isn’t stuck in development anymore. It’s finally picking up speed.
Part of what helped clear the runway is a shift in priorities. Liman and Cruise had been gearing up for their underwater thriller Deeper, co-starring Ana de Armas, but that project hit a delay due to financing issues. Instead of waiting around, the duo pivoted back to a story they’ve both been eager to revisit.
Liman even recently went back and rewatched the original film with Cruise, and it clearly reignited something. He said: “Tom and I just actually rewatched it about two months ago, because I hadn’t seen it in 10 years. I was like, ‘Wow, that is a really good movie.’”
Edge of Tomorrow has aged incredibly well since its 2014 release. While it pulled in a respectable $375 million globally against a $175 million budget, its real staying power came later through streaming and home viewing, where it built a loyal fanbase and earned its reputation as a sci-fi favorite.
The biggest obstacle to a sequel has always been Cruise’s schedule. Over the past decade, he’s been locked into the Mission: Impossible franchise, knocking out multiple entries back-to-back, with only a couple of breaks for projects like American Made and Top Gun: Maverick. Now that he’s stepping into a new phase post-Mission: Impossible, there’s finally room to make this happen.
Cruise has also been strengthening ties with Warner Bros., thanks to a recent deal that allows him to develop and star in projects for the studio. Warner CEO David Zaslav has reportedly been eager to get Edge of Tomorrow 2 moving, especially since it’s one of the few Cruise-led properties the studio controls.
Liman has been very open about the studio’s continued interest. “I do think there’s probably no better compliment to a movie than people wanting for there to be a sequel. There’s no better compliment than Warner Bros. constantly bringing up, ‘Will you go and make another one of these?’”
Emily Blunt is also still expected to return. She confirmed back in 2023 that a script was ready and she was on board. That script comes from Christopher McQuarrie, one of Cruise’s closest creative collaborators, which should give fans some extra confidence in where the story is headed.
There’s also been talk that the sequel, at one point titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat, could take a pretty ambitious swing at what a follow-up looks like. Liman has even suggested it could “revolutionize how people make sequels,” which is a big claim, but honestly, the first film already played with structure in a way that felt fresh.
At this point, everything seems to be lining up. The director is ready, the cast is ready, the studio is pushing for it, and Cruise finally has an opening in his schedule. After years of uncertainty, Edge of Tomorrow 2 might actually be happening.
Now the real question is whether it can live up to the original’s clever, adrenaline-fueled storytelling. If they pull it off, we could be looking at one of the most exciting sci-fi sequels in years.
