Tom Cruise Offers Exciting Update on TOP GUN 3 and DAYS OF THUNDER Sequel

While promoting Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Cruise offered an exciting update for fans regarding Top Gun 3. Despite the 35-year wait between the original Top Gun and its blockbuster sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, the next installment may not take quite as long, though with Cruise, nothing’s ever rushed.

In a recent interview with Australia's Today show, Cruise was asked point blank if Top Gun 3 was “on the horizon.” His response?

“Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible. It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick.

“There’s numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now. I’m always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film. I just finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu too, who did The Revenant, that was an extraordinary experience and [Christopher McQuarrie] and I are always working on several different films.”

So, Top Gun 3 is being discussed, and with the way Cruise works, it’s clear that crafting a sequel isn’t about striking while the iron is hot. It’s about getting the story right. The same patience that fueled Maverick’s massive success is being applied again here.

There’s been plenty of speculation over the last year. In early 2024, reports suggested Paramount was moving forward with Top Gun 3, but no details ever materialized.

Meanwhile, cast members like Glen Powell and Miles Teller have kept quiet. No commitments, no denials. Just a unified message: when Cruise is ready, so are they. It’s clear this franchise moves on his terms.

With Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning being positioned as the end of Cruise’s long-running spy saga (though he won’t say that definitively), there’s now real space for Maverick to take flight again. Whether Joseph Kosinski would return to direct remains unknown, as does the direction the story might take.
