Tom Hiddleston Almost Spoiled Loki’s Fate in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY and His Answer Is Concerning

Marvel fans already have plenty to worry about heading into Avengers: Doomsday, and now Loki can officially be added to the danger list.

There are so many big questions surrounding the next Avengers movie, including the increasingly uncomfortable question of which characters won’t make it out alive.

We’ve been hearing reports that so many characters are going to die in this movie, and it will be interesting to to see who actually walks away from it alive. Loki has also become part of that conversation.

Killing Loki again would be a strange move. The guy has already died, faked his death, survived what looked like certain death, and had his neck snapped by Thanos.

More importantly, the Disney+ series Loki gave the character one of the MCU’s best transformations, ending with him making an enormous sacrifice to hold the timelines together as the God of Stories.

Having him return just to die again could cheapen that ending. It could also risk repeating what happened with Wanda Maximoff, whose fantastic journey in WandaVision was followed by her destructive turn and apparent death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Unfortunately, Tom Hiddleston isn’t doing much to calm anyone down. During an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused, Hiddleston was directly asked about the possibility of Loki dying in Avengers: Doomsday.

He started answering, realized where his sentence might be taking him, and slammed on the brakes:

“If I keep going down the path of the end of this sentence, I will find myself revealing things that, uh, it depends what you, you know, I’m not. I’m going to stop. I have to stop. I have to.”

That’s certainly not the reassuring “Loki will be fine” answer fans might have wanted. There’s also an interesting moment when Hiddleston says, “It depends what you,” before stopping himself.

He appears to begin making a hard “c” sound, which could suggest he was about to say something along the lines of “It depends what you call death.” That’s purely speculation, of course, but considering how weird death can become when gods, alternate realities, timelines, and Multiverse rules are involved, it’s an intriguing possibility.

Hiddleston did make it clear that Loki has an important role to play in Doomsday, specifically bringing up his current responsibility for the timelines. “We live in a multiverse now, I think, and Loki is the God of Stories,” Hiddleston said.

After all these years with Marvel, Hiddleston knows exactly how dangerous it can be to finish the wrong sentence during an interview. The interesting part isn’t that he refused to reveal Loki’s fate. Of course he did. It’s how quickly his answer wandered into territory he clearly thought could reveal too much.

Loki could technically “die” without Marvel completely undoing the ending of his series. His current existence is already unlike that of almost every other MCU character, so whatever happens to him may not fit the normal definition of death. That would certainly explain why Hiddleston seemed to think the question required a more complicated answer.

Hopefully Marvel isn’t planning to bring Loki back simply to kill him for another emotional gut punch. His ending in Loki was earned, and if Avengers: Doomsday is going to change his fate, it needs to be worth disturbing one of the MCU’s strongest character arcs.
