Tom Holland Teases a "So Funny" Spider-Man and Punisher Dynamic in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Tom Holland is swinging back into action as everyone’s favorite web-slinger in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but this time the vibe is very different. Instead of leaning on the guidance of Tony Stark, Peter Parker is crossing paths with a much rougher presence in Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle.

According to Holland, that shift creates one of the most entertaining relationships he’s ever had on screen.

Holland opened up about the experience while promoting the film at the Empire State Building, and you can tell this new dynamic has him genuinely excited. After building such a strong connection with Iron Man in previous films, this new pairing flips the script in a fun and chaotic way.

Tom Holland shared: "I think one of the things I've enjoyed most about my tenure as Spider-Man is sharing the screen with Robert Downey, Jr., and really building that Spider-Man/Iron Man relationship.

“But I am so excited for people to see Jon Bernthal as the Punisher in this movie. He's come from a very different world, you know, the R-rated kind of universe, and we've basically picked him up and plonked him into our world. And he absolutely sings in this movie. He is incredible."

That contrast is exactly what makes this pairing so compelling. In the comics, Spider-Man and the Punisher have always had friction.

Frank Castle originally showed up as a Spider-Man adversary in Amazing Spider-Man #129 back in 1974 before evolving into the anti-hero fans know today. Their clashing ideologies have always been part of the appeal. Peter believes in saving everyone. Frank believes in ending threats permanently.

That tension hasn’t gone anywhere in this movie, but it sounds like the actors found a way to reshape it into something even more entertaining.

Holland explained: "The relationship between Spider-Man and the Punisher is so funny. And it changed a lot, it evolved a lot as we were shooting, because Jon and I would improvise.

“It started as this relationship of two people who kind of hate each other, I guess, and as we started improvising, it became this kind of big brother/little brother rivalry. It might be my favorite dynamic I've ever seen with Spider-Man."

That’s a pretty cool statement considering how beloved the Peter Parker and Tony Stark relationship has been in the MCU. The idea of Spider-Man dealing with someone like Frank Castle sounds like a recipe for some awesome moments.

You’ve got a wisecracking kid hero paired with a no-nonsense savage vigilante. That contrast should create some seriously fun moments in the movie.

With the movie set to hit theaters on July 31, this fresh dynamic between Spider-Man and the Punisher might end up being one of the highlights of the film.
