Tom Holland Teases Reshoots on Spider-Man: Brand New Day Adding "More Humor" and "Layering in a Villain Plotline"

The next chapter of Spider-Man’s story is getting a little extra polish before it hits theaters. With just a few months to go before Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings onto the big screen, Tom Holland has confirmed that Marvel is back in action with reshoots.

Don’t be worried, though, Holland is says this isn’t damage control. It’s more like adding a few extra toppings to something that’s already working.

In a recent interview with GQ, Holland revealed he’s currently in London revisiting the film, and the goal sounds pretty fun. "We’re finding some ways to add a little bit more humor," he said. "We’re layering in a villain plotline in a new way and some really fun stuff."

A “new way” to handle a villain plotline suggests Marvel might be experimenting with structure or perspective, possibly giving us something a little different from the usual hero vs. bad guy formula. It also raises questions about which villain is getting that extra attention.

Before anyone starts spiraling, Holland made it clear the core film isn’t being fixed. It’s already in a good place. "I can positively say that the stuff we’re doing, we don’t need," he explained. "The movie works and sings as it is. We’re just adding the icing on the cake in certain areas."

Marvel Studios has a long history of late-stage tweaks, so this isn’t out of the ordinary. All of these films go through reshoots at some point. Still, fans have been debating what this means for the tone of the movie.

The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day hinted at a more grounded and emotional Peter Parker. After the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter erased MJ’s memory to protect her, audiences were expecting a heavier, more isolated version of the character. Some fans liked that direction but a dash of added humor couldn’t hurt to balance the mood.

Humor has always been part of Peter Parker’s DNA, even in his toughest moments. The real question is how that humor blends with the more serious arc this story is setting up.

The film is also expanding the world in a big way. New cast members include Tramell Tillman and Sadie Sink, both stepping into still-mysterious roles that fans are already trying to decode.

Behind the camera, Destin Daniel Cretton is directing, bringing his style from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings into Spidey’s world.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day picks up years after Peter’s life-changing decision, with the hero stepping back into action to face new threats. And he won’t be doing it alone. The film brings in Mark Ruffalo as Hulk and Jon Bernthal as Punisher, which opens the door to some wild dynamics we haven’t seen in a Spider-Man movie before.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day lands in theaters on July 31, and it sounds like we’re in for a version of Spidey that mixes heart, action, and maybe a few surprises we don’t see coming.
