TOP GUN: MAVERICK Director on Shooting Brad Pitt's Formula One Racing Movie Like He Shot TOP GUN
Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is currently developing his next big feature film project Formula One. The film stars Brad Pitt as a seven-time world champion Formula One race driver that comes out of retirement to race again and to mentor a promising rookie.
Kosinski talked to Deadline about the movie saying that it’s “coming fast” and explained that they are shooting it using the techniques they learned while making Top Gun: Maverick. He said: “It’s fascinating. I can’t wait to show people behind the scenes. We’re going to be shooting on the tracks with real cars and trying to take everything I learned in Top Gun to apply to Formula One. It’ll be fun.”
When previously talking about the way the film is being shot, Kosinski shared: “Certainly seeing people react to an in-camera, authentically captured film like Top Gun makes us all feel good that our approach works and is appreciated by audiences.”
He went on to talk about applying that to his next film, saying: “It’s almost funny to me to see people who are so enamored with real photography. Younger people almost haven’t seen a lot of it. They’re so used to CGI [computer-generated images] being a tool of big movies that when you shoot something for real, it feels innovative. That’s exactly the approach for Formula One … to shoot at the real races and real cars and capture it. It’s going to be a huge challenge but an exciting one for me.”
He’s right! So many films utilize CGI these days and it’s super rare to see something like what they did with Top Gun: Maverick. In fact, we may never see anything like that again involving fighter jets. But, I’m looking forward to seeing how they pull it off with Formula One racing! This sounds like it’s going to be a great movie, and I’m excited to see how it’s going to be different from the other racing films that have been made in the past.
Ehren Kruger is writing the script, while Top Gun‘s Jerry Bruckheimer is producing alongside Plan B. The film project is being developed for Apple, but it has plans on being released it in theaters.
