Trailer For THE DARK CRYSTAL Re-Release Which is Returning to Theaters This October
Fathom Entertainment has revealed a brand new trailer for the 2025 theatrical re-release of The Dark Crystal, the iconic fantasy adventure brought to life by Jim Henson and Frank Oz.
First released in 1982, this visionary puppet-driven film has become a cult favorite for movie geeks who grew up in the 80s, and now it’s making its way back to the big screen for a limited run.
This special event is part of The Jim Henson Company’s 70th Anniversary celebration. Each screening will include an introduction from Brian Henson, Jim Henson’s son and current Chairman of the Board of The Henson Company.
Fans will get to experience the groundbreaking film the way it was originally intended, with all of its incredible puppetry, practical effects, and stunning creature design larger than life once again.
The original story follows Jen and Kira, the last surviving members of the Gelfling tribe, as they embark on a dangerous quest to restore balance to their world. Their journey brings them face-to-face with the sinister Skeksis and other mystical beings across the land of Thra. The film starred Stephen Garlick, Lisa Maxwell, Billie Whitelaw, and Percy Edwards.
Here’s the official synopsis: “Another world, another time... in the age of Wonder. From genius filmmaker Jim Henson comes The Dark Crystal, a masterful live-action fantasy starring some of the most imaginative creatures ever put on film.
“Many years ago, the mysterious ‘Crystal’ was cracked and an age of chaos began, led by the evil race of Skeksis who rule over the land of Thra.
“Meanwhile, raised in solitude by a gentle race of creatures called the Mystics, the Gelfling orphan Jen is sent on a quest to find the missing shard that will heal the Crystal and restore balance to the universe.”
The film was co-directed by Henson and Oz, with a screenplay by David Odell based on a story by Henson, and produced by Henson alongside Gary Kurtz (Star Wars). When it was first released in December 1982 by Universal Pictures, it earned around $40 million during its run.
The Dark Crystal has remained a fan favorite, celebrated for its artistry and imaginative world-building. In 2019, Netflix even expanded its legacy with the prequel series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, which gave a new generation of fans a chance to explore the world of Thra.
Now the original is returning to theaters for two nights only on October 12th and 13th, 2025. For anyone who has only seen the film at home or for longtime fans eager to relive the magic on the big screen, this re-release is the perfect chance to return to the world “in the age of Wonder.”
