Trailer For The Green Day-Inspired Road Trip Comedy NIMRODS Looks Like a Fun Ride

The trailer has arrived for Nimrods, a coming-of-age road trip comedy inspired by the early touring days of Green Day, and it looks like a fun, chaotic journey packed with music, mischief, and plenty of youthful ambition.

The film was originally titled New Years Rev when it premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, but it has since been rebranded as Nimrods ahead of its theatrical release this summer.

Directed by Lee Kirk, the movie follows three teenage friends who believe they've landed the opportunity of a lifetime: opening for Green Day at a massive New Year's Eve concert in Los Angeles.

As you might expect, things aren't exactly what they seem. The story centers on three aspiring musicians who are completely obsessed with Green Day and dream of making it big.

Convinced they're heading toward a career-changing gig, they pile into a vehicle and hit the road from Kansas to California. What they don't realize is that the supposed opening slot was actually set up as a prank by one of their brothers. Still, that doesn't stop them from chasing the dream.

The synopsis explains: "Since Green Day burst onto the scene in the 1990s, their sound and success have helped launch a countless number of garage rock bands, each aspiring to channel the group's energy & attitude.

“Among the most committed are The Analog Dogs, [a rock band] who want nothing more than to meet Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool. Forcing their way to drop off a demo to their beloved idols in hopes of earning some recognition, they instead get an extremely rare opportunity — to open up for Green Day at their New Year's concert. Or so they think.

“Unbeknownst to them, the opener gig is actually a prank played on them by one of their brothers. Nevertheless, naively optimistic, the young trio set off on the road from Kansas to California, with wide-eyed dreams of being on stage alongside their heroes."

The trailer leans heavily into the classic road trip formula, throwing its young heroes into one ridiculous situation after another as they chase a dream that may not even exist.

It has the kind of scrappy energy that feels right at home with a story inspired by Green Day's early years traveling in a tour van, playing wherever they could and trying to make a name for themselves.

The film stars Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust as the three friends at the center of the story. They're joined by a cast that includes Ignacio Diaz-Silverio, Keen Ruffalo, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Mckenna Grace, Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, and Sean Gunn.

Nimrods was written and directed by Kirk, whose previous credits include The Giant Mechanical Man and Ordinary World. The project is produced by Tim Perell, Stella Bulochnikov, Green Day members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool, along with Anna Keegan and Robin Rapino.

Nimrods looks like an entertaining mix of friendship, rock music, bad decisions, and life lessons learned on the open road. If you're a Green Day fan or just enjoy road trip comedies about underdogs chasing impossible dreams, this one could be worth keeping on your radar.

Legion M and Inaugural Entertainment will release Nimrods exclusively in theaters on August 14, 2026.
