TRANSFORMERS ONE Producer on What It Will Take to Get the Sequel Made

Transformer One comes out in theaters later this week, and I’m curious to see if fans and audiences show up to watch it.

The movie has been getting lots of great reviews and having seen it myself over the weekend at a special fan screening event, I will say it was a lot better than I thought it’d be. I don’t think it’s the best Transformers movie made, but it does tell a strong story.

When Transformers One was first announced, we learned that it was the start of a possible trilogy of films. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura called it a "natural trilogy,” and said it’s going to explore “Cybertron in a way you've never seen it, that no one's ever seen it before.”

The producer is now talking about what it will take to actually push a sequel into production, there’s one condition that it will happen under and that’s if the first movie is a success.

Di Bonaventura told ScreenRant in and interview: "Number one, if we're successful with this [Transformers] movie, we're going to do a sequel for this. And we already have, I think, the beginnings of a really interesting story for the second one, which is also character-based, the way the first [is].”

So, we’ll just have to wait and see if a ton of people actually buy into the reviews and show up to watch it.

He previously talked about their sequel plans and its themes saying: "We have themes that we want to explore. A theme that we want to explore in the next movie is trust. And can you win it back? Or once lost, it's gone.

“So we build it around a few big ideas that are also quite action ideas, but mostly we're going to go at it thematically. So now Optimus has now become Optimus Prime.

“What's he going to do to now get all the people of Iacon behind [him] and like how do you do that? Same thing with Megatron. Okay, you got all the Decepticons. Now what?"

He continued: "We're gonna explore the sort of progression of leadership which I think it should be really fun for people so it's not a dry subject and what I like about it is, it's definitely going to fail. It's definitely going to fail because no leader gets it all right."

Cooley then adds: "There's a lot more story, obviously, because they will eventually come to Earth.”

This movie tells the “origin story of how the most iconic characters in the Transformers universe, Orion Pax and D-16, went from brothers-in-arms to become sworn enemies, Optimus Prime and Megatron.”

The film stars Chris Hemsworth as Orion Pax / Optimus Prime, Brian Tyree Henry as D-16 / Megatron, Scarlett Johansson as Elita-1, and Keegan-Michael Key as B-127 / Bumblebee.

Transformers One will hit theaters on September 20th.
