TRANSFORMERS Producer Shares The Closest Plan They Have For The G.I. JOE Crossover Movie

This Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover movie that is being developed at Paramount Pictures just bugs the living hell out of me. I’m such a huge fan of these franchises, but the studio is doing it all wrong and there’s nothing I can do to stop them from making all of the big mistakes that they’re going to continue to make. All I can do is deliver the updates and rant about it. Thanks for letting me vent.

As you know, G.I. Joe was incorporated into the Transformers universe at the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in the most lackluster way. According to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, they were about to start writing the script when the writers’ strike launched. They are now hoping to start working on the film in 2025 with a 2026 release.

The producer also teased the film in an interview with Sci-Fi & Fantasy Gazette and shared the closest plan that they currently have for the movie, saying:

"Like every other Transformers movie, the ingredients of the movie is humans and robots get together to stop the villain. The Joes are going to be part of the ingredients now. We're not going into the Joe world, they're coming into our world. So, if you think about it that way, I think that's the closest thing to the plan that we have. We now have to figure out the plot we want to do, et cetera, but they will be an active participant, if you would, a few of the characters, in trying to stop the bad guy."

So, G.I. Joe is just going to now exist in the Transformers universe. Rise of the Beasts was set in 1994, which is long before the events of the original Transformers movie in 2007. If the Joes were introduced in 1994, where were they in the first Transformers movie and all the other films? Between 1994 and 2007, were the G.I. Joes obliterated by Cobra or the Decepticons? Will Cobra team up with the Decepticons?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this approach they’re taking is dumb, and there’s a much better way to handle it. I’ve already shared my ideas for it here. But, Paramount will just continue to make mediocre Transformers movies. It doesn’t even seem like they are going to attempt to make another G.I. Joe solo movie because for some reason they just can’t figure out how to tell a good G.I. Joe story!

These film franchises just need new creative blood and the studio needs to reboot with the whole thing with a fresh new plan. The fact that they continue to build on Transformer’s mediocrity is so frustrating and confusing.

Di Bonaventura previously said: “We've talked about it since the beginning of the franchise because the fans have been like, 'Come on, when you are going to do Joe?!,' and the truth of the matter is there's so many great Transformers characters that we didn't feel like we needed to rush and do G.I. Joe. But you also want an organic way otherwise it feels like a cynical exercise."

And what they are currently doing is 100% a cynical exercise. Good grief.
