TRANSFORMERS x G.I. JOE Crossover Hits a Rough Patch With New Update
I’m not sure if there’s been much anticipation around the long-teased crossover between Transformers and G.I. Joe, I think its a dumb idea, but the latest update reveals the project is still alive. However, it’s been a slow moving process.
Director Steven Caple Jr., who brought us the disappointing film, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, recently shed some light on where things stand, and the takeaway is simple: the crossover isn’t next in line.
Speaking about his involvement and the future of the franchise, Caple Jr. made it clear that while he’s still interested in the idea, he won’t be stepping behind the camera for the next installment.
When asked, “Are you any closer to getting back in that world? Do you have an update for us?” the director replied, “I do.” He added, “I still do have big plans for what that could be, but we’ll have to see.
“We’ll have to see what comes about it. I am not part of the next Transformers film, but it’s still in development and there’s still time, so you just never know. Yeah.”
Rise of the Beasts dropped a pretty clear hint that a larger shared universe was coming. The final moments tied the Transformers world directly to G.I. Joe, setting up a big crossover chapter that was slapped on without any real thought or direction.
But, it sounds like Paramount is still figuring out the roadmap, which is good. It’s better than jumping into something they admittedly didn’t have a plan for.
There’s no confirmed release window, no production timeline, and now no Caple Jr. attached to the next film. That leaves the crossover in a strange limbo where it exists, but without a clear direction forward. I’m gald they aren’t jumping into it.
The idea of Autobots teaming up with G.I. Joe is still a massive draw, and it’s hard to imagine the studio walking away from that potential. It just might take longer than expected to get there, which is smart. This is something that needs to be properly built towards. They need to be smart about this.
