Travis Knight Teases Future Masters of the Universe Stories and Possible She-Ra Connections
Even though the live-action Masters of the Universe movie hasn’t hit theaters yet, fans are already wondering if this could become the massive fantasy franchise.
The world of Eternia is massive. Between He-Man, Skeletor, Castle Grayskull, the Horde, Snake Mountain, and all the wild heroes and villains spread across the mythology, there’s enough material here to fuel years of movies and spin-offs if audiences connect with it.
While speaking about the film, director Travis Knight confirmed that Prince Adam’s sister, Adora, exists in this version of the Masters of the Universe universe, which will send fans into speculation mode about the future possibility of She-Ra entering the franchise.
At the same time, Knight sounds very careful about getting too far ahead of himself. He said: “Look, I always approach these things as if you only get one shot at it.
“And so, if that’s the case, we make this movie, and there are no more stories to follow, we put everything we had into it, and I’m incredibly proud of the film. I think it’s fun. I think it’s exciting. I think it has an incredible heart. I think it tells an emotional story.
“And I’m just really proud of the crew who did exceptional work, the actors who brought everything they had in the movie. I’m just really proud of the work that everybody put into it and what we got out of the other side.”
Studios love building cinematic universes before audiences even know whether they care about the first movie. Knight seems far more interested in making sure this Masters of the Universe film actually stands on its own before worrying about future chapters.
But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t thought about where the story could go next. “In terms of where we could go from here, of course, you are always imagining,” Knight continued. “There are things that I wanted to put in this movie that we weren’t able to do.
“Things I’d like to explore, and deeper aspects of some of these characters I’d like to explore. I think about what’s next for Adam. Where does the next stage of his life take him? Now he’s properly He-Man, what does that mean? And the essence of it is relationships. It’s all about relationships for me.
“So, how do those relationships evolve moving forward? Ultimately, this stuff is not in our hands. As much as we would like to tell more of these stories, if the world doesn’t want them, we won’t tell them. But if the world demands more of them, we’d be very lucky to be able to tell more stories in this universe.”
Knight clearly isn’t looking at Masters of the Universe as just a one-and-done nostalgia project. He sees a massive fantasy universe filled with characters and mythology that still have plenty of stories left to tell.
There’s a ridiculous amount of potential here. The inclusion of Adora alone opens the door for future She-Ra stories, which could dramatically expand the scale of this cinematic universe.
Fans of the classic cartoons already know how important that character becomes to the larger mythology, especially once the Horde and Hordak enter the picture.
Then there’s Skeletor, Snake Mountain, the wider Eternian kingdoms, and dozens of fan-favorite heroes and villains who didn’t even make it into this first film.
Knight has already admitted there were characters and ideas he couldn’t fit into the movie because the story needed to stay focused on Adam’s journey. That means there’s still a huge chunk of this universe left unexplored.
What’s especially interesting is hearing Knight talk about the future through the lens of character relationships instead of just bigger battles or larger spectacle. He seems genuinely invested in what happens to Adam emotionally after becoming He-Man and how those relationships evolve moving forward.
That emotional foundation could end up being the thing that separates Masters of the Universe from a lot of other fantasy franchises trying to launch right now.
Of course, none of this matters unless audiences actually show up for the first movie. Knight seems completely aware of that reality. He isn’t making promises about ten sequels or giant crossover plans. He’s simply acknowledging that the world of Eternia is rich enough to support more stories if fans embrace this version of it.
And if this movie delivers the fun fantasy adventure fans have been hoping for, there’s a very good chance audiences will want to spend a lot more time in Eternia.
